This will be my second year running on the Children’s Hospital Miles for Miracles Team. I have set a personal goal of raising $3,000 for Children’s Hospital.
Children’s Hospital is a place I hold very close to my heart. It is a place where my twin sister and I were treated. A place where we were separated and a place that saved my sisters life.
My sister Caitlin and I were born conjoined twins. It wasn’t until my mother was several months pregnant that the doctors realized we were conjoined and that my sister had a bad heart. My parents decided to have us separated right after we were born to ensure that we both received the best care. However, doctors believed my sister would not survive. With a team of over 50 doctors and nurses and after several hours of surgery, the separation was a success.
Caitlin was born with a condition called Situs Inversus, a condition in which her major organs were mirrored to mine. She was also born with a congenital heart defect. Because of her medical condition, she had to undergo dozens of surgeries including 6 open heart surgeries, shunts, and a pacemaker. In 2005 she suffered a stroke leaving her with brain damage and paralysis. Doctors again did not think she would survive, but in true Caitlin fashion, she proved everyone wrong.
Over the years, Caitlin went into congestive heart failure and liver failure. She met with doctors regularly to discuss her options. She fought through taps, procedures and frequent hospital visits. Caitlin fought every single day for 34 years. On November 19th, 2018 Caitlin lost her lifelong battle and became the sweetest angel.
This year I am running for Caitlin. I am running for the hospital that gave us 34 beautiful years with her. I am running for the doctors, nurses and staff that took such great care of her. I am running for the families whose children are being treated at Children’s Hospital.
Caitlin was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people that god could have created.
This year I am running because of her. Because of her thoughtfulness, her perfectly kind heart, and her amazing sense of humor. I am running to give what she gave so many. I am running for those who can’t.
Thank you for your support!
