I am Running!
As you know, I have the pleasure of working for the Credit Unions Kids at Heart team as the Team Coordinator, a position I have had for the past several years. I work closely with the athletes who run on behalf of our Team to raise money and awareness for the very important scientific research that we fund. This life saving/changing research is undertaken in order to find treatments, therapies and, we hope and believe cures for Moyamoya Disease, Sturge Weber Syndrome, Pediatric Brain Cancer, Cerebral Palsy and Pediatric Epilepsy. I also work closely with the amazing children our beloved patient partners and their families. Saying that I feel passionate about what our Team does is a huge understatement. The lessons I have learned from the men, women and children I serve on our Team is one of my biggest blessings, and, because of this I have made the decision this year to put my legs and lungs with my heart and soul by running the 2019 Boston Marathon.
2019 is a very important year for my family as it marks the 20th anniversary of my son Thomas’s death. Thomas died unexpectedly during what was supposed to be a normal delivery albeit one week past my due date. He passed away on May 8, 1999 the day before Mother’s Day. As you can imagine, this was a heartbreaking tragedy for my family. There was no hope for a different outcome, or chance to make things better for him.
The people on our Team and all the children being treated at Boston Children’s hospital have HOPE, hope that the research we support will make a difference. We know it already has made positive impacts, but, as we have been told, research is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes years in some cases to find cures and treatments and funding is essential to ensure we make things better for children and give HOPE to their families.
I’m elated to say I will be running for some of my favorite people “my other family”, all of the CUKids patient partners: Ryan, Timmy, Drew, Andy, Vraj, Maddy, Jackson, John, Abby, Sammy, Matty, Kayla, Everett, Ava, Jack and in memory of both CJ and my son Thomas. Thinking of each of them during the training season and on Marathon Monday will give me the inspiration I need to train and finish the race. I will remember the challenges that they and their families face; the grace, strength and love with which they face each day. Also, as I lace up my sneakers, my other wish is for my children, Bobby, Danny and Julia to understand the importance of helping others and to have a desire to make a difference whenever you can.
The money we raise will go directly into the hands of the doctors and researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital. The Credit Unions Kids at Heart Team does not withhold any operating expenses from funds we raise – I promise your donation truly does make a difference.
With Love and Appreciation
