This is the most common response I hear when my friends and family hear that I am planning to run the New York City Marathon this November.
This is also another all too common question asked by many sick children and their parents when undergoing evaluations and treatment for their illness.
I was lucky enough to train and complete the Chicago Marathon this past October 2022 and after it was over, I believed I could do more. I was amazed at the many charity runners and their enthusiasm and dedication and decided I wanted to be a part of that community of runners.
I am training and running this race in support of Boston Children’s Hospital, who though their research and dedication to caring for children and their families are working to make the “AGAIN?” question a little less onerous and hopefully a little less likely to be asked.
Many of you may know my daughter was blessed to receive care a few years ago at Boston Children’s Hospital. As an experienced medical professional, I was amazed at the outstanding world class care provided by the team at the hospital. I continue to be amazed at the worldwide reach of this organization and am not surprised to hear of other local patients receiving life changing care at BCH.
I have been fortunate to be paired with a patient partner named EJ Spellman as one of my teammates. He is 27 years old and is living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. He has a wonderful supportive family and has received excellent care from Boston Children's Hospital over the years and provides me with meaningful inspiration as the training gets harder.
The recent pandemic has taken its toll on many health care workers and organizations. Money raised from this program will support the Every Child Fund. This supports family lodging meal and travel support, patient support including pet therapy, artistic programs, social workers and interpreters to help reduce stress for patients and families. The fund also provides clinical research support and seed money for new, innovative projects and funds for outreach programs.
I am asking you today to consider joining me in supporting Boston Children’s Hospital. Your generosity strengthens my motivation for training and completing this goal. Any amount help make a difference. Please also consider any possible matching gifts provided by your employer.
Many of us support many worthwhile causes and I believe BCH is a one such organization. We have seen first hand the impact it can have on patients and families. I hope we can help provide funds to support others less fortunate. If you cannot support BCH, I encourage you to seek out and support other worthy organizations with your time and or money to help make our communities a better place for all.
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
With love and appreciation,
