My amazing nephew, Lex, is a patient at Boston Children's Hospital. When Lex was 14 months old, he suffered 4 heart attacks and a stroke. After miraculously surviving (thanks to quick action and CPR by his mother/my sister), we learned he had a very rare, degenerative disease called SMARD1. He needed a tracheostomy to breathe. Doctors in London (where Lex lived at the time) said he wouldn't make it to age 2 and wanted to end his life.
Thankfully, Lex's parents (both neuroscientists) did their own research, and fought hard to get Lex over the US. He may not be able to walk or talk, but Lex is incredible and so full of love! He laughs a lot and brings so much joy to everyone he's around.
Lex (now 6 1/2 years old!) and his parents currently live in Boston, and he is a patient at Boston Children's Hospital. Doctors at BCH are working on ground-breaking treatments for some of his conditions, and Lex continues to beat the odds of his disease.
I am so excited and honored to have been selected as a part of Boston Children's Hospital's Miles for Miracles Team for the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. I am passionate about helping my incredible nephew Lex and other kids at Boston Children’s Hospital find lifesaving care.
