I've joined the Miles for Miracles for the TCS New York City Marathon because my family has been greatly affected by cancer. Cancer sucks and unfortunately my family, and many others, are all too familiar with it. My dream is to run the NYC marathon not just to raise money in support of the children and families at Boston Childrens, but to celebrate my family's journey and to challenge myself.
For those who aren't familiar with my family's story, my younger brother Kevin had childhood leukemia and received a life saving bone marrow transplant from my older brother Brian at Boston Children's Hospital in 1993. Although not an easy time, the incredible support from our community and the outstanding care he received at Boston Childens has left us forever grateful. Kevin has gone on to accomplish many great things and currently works as an assistant to children with special needs in the VT school system. His positive oulook against adversity is motivating to all around him.
Brian was then diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016 and my younger sister, Rachel, was diagnosed with melanoma in 2022. They both received the treatment they needed and are thriving.
In March 2023 our Dad was diagnosed with Thymic Cancer. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy in Boston and truly rocking it. His strength and positive attitude inspire us daily. He continues to live life to the fullest and pursues his passions of hiking, biking, and running.
Running has been a big family passion for us and, personally, has always been a great mental health outlet. I love to run, but after years of infertility followed by eventually being blessed with 2 amazing kids, I can honestly say I am starting from square one with my fitness. However, I cannot think of any greater motivation for training than to run for Boston Childrens. Every dollar raised will help fund breakthrough research, family support services, and vital care not covered by insurance through the Hospital’s Every Child Fund. I appreciate your consideration in donating, and my marathon journey will be fueled by your support and dedicated to my family and all those affected by cancer.
