Geared toward high schools and colleges, this yearlong, student-led fundraiser culminates in a day of dancing. Fundraising helps kids at your local Children's Miracle Network Hospital—Boston Children's (that's us!).
It's all about teamwork! And our team is united in support of the Hellenic Cardiac Fund at Boston Children's Hospital because we want to help patients get the care they need.
The Hellenic Cardiac Fund was founded by Chris and Bess Pappas as a result of a personal family struggle On May 31st, 1974 their son was wheeled away on a gurney at 7 am for what turned out to be a 7 hour and 10 minute open heart surgery. Chris & Bess Pappas, full of anxiety and fear walked down the street to a Greek Church to pray, but it was closed. At the same time a small elderly woman dressed in black walked up to the door to open it and asked Bess and Chris if they were ok and needed to come inside. The church's caretaker said she never comes to open the church that early but she had a dream that awoke her and told her to go. Inside, they lit candles and knelt in deep prayer. Bess asked God to heal her son and she would give her life to some how help other children in need. She felt a calming sense wash over her along with the sweet scent of Gardenia although none were present. She knew at that moment that her son would survive and be all right.
To thank God, the Pappas family created the Hellenic Cardiac Fund. The 100% volunteer staff provides translation services for visiting Greek families, rides to and from the airport, apartments for long term patient families to stay for the most serious cases and financial assistance for families over and above insurance coverages.
This is how Bess's promise developed into a charity that has helped over 1,400 families to date and has received numerous awards for selfless giving including the Athens Academy Award and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor on May 11, 2002, which is the highest award given by the President of the United States to non military people who have selflessly given back to those of their heritage and roots. As the Director of the Fund, Bess was the recipient of this prestigious award and at 80 years old still volunteers living up to her life long promise to God.
