Team Benji
Welcome to Team Benji! We are so happy you're here.
Our son, Benjamin "Benji" Warren Casas was born on October 7, 2024 with Posterial Urethral Valves, a blockage in his urethra. What followed was a five-week stay in the Boston Children's NICU, and two weeks on the "floor." While the blockage was surgically removed, it caused lasting damage, and Benji was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. The disease has now progressed to Stage 5, and this year, we will continue to work with his team at BCH as we prepare for a kidney transplant. His team at BCH follows him closely, and with so many appointments, inpatient stays, and emergency room visits, BCH is like a second home to us.
Today, Benji is doing well! Despite it all, Benji is an extremely happy baby who loves everyone, and never fails to make you smile. He has a lot of energy, and nothing slows him down! We are so grateful for his incredibly dedicated team. His nephrologists, gastroenterologist, urologist, dietician, not to mention his nurses and early intervention therapists, have provided so much support to us.
We want to give a special shout out to the Boston Children's NICU and the incredible nurses who work there. Not only did they take care of our baby, they took care of US, his parents. Having a child in the NICU is traumatic, but because of how wonderful the BCH NICU was, we were SAD to leave! Isn't that wild?
In the NICU, so many different nurses took care of Benji. They all took care of Benji like he was their baby. The nurses also made sure we got food, answered all questions we had, connected us with the BCH social worker, and picked up our phone calls at any hour of the night or day, including 5 in the morning! They never made us feel like a burden. We will be thankful for the rest of our lives to the staff at the NICU for being so caring and professional during an extremely difficult time in our lives. It's thanks to them that we are where we are today.
