I’m fundraising on behalf of Boston Children’s Hospital for a few reasons.
First, the Trust. My first job out of college was within the prospect research arm of BCH Trust. It was here that I met some of my nearest and dearest friends. With these ladies (and Joey, of course), my transition into the real world was filled with fun, laughter and so many amazing memories.
Second, our daughter, Emery. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that my own family would be in need of the amazing care I once fundraised for as a twenty something.
On March 31, 2018, we welcomed our sweet girl into the world. After arriving home a few days later, we knew something just wasn’t right. We consulted with our pediatrician, who sent us to our community hospital. From there, they were unable to definitively determine what was going on and Emery was transported by the Critcal Care Transport Team to the NICU at CHB for further evaluation.
We were welcomed that evening by the most warm and gracious NICU nurses. Doctors were immediately brought in and Emery was sent for testing. It was determined that she has malrotated intestines, but that the severity of damage was not known. Emergency surgery was needed and they weren’t quite sure what they were going to find. Those were quite possibly the heaviest, most heartbreaking words that the parents of a 7 day old could ever hear.
Dr. Brent Weil and his team operated on Emery that night. After the Ladd’s procedure and appendectomy were complete, we were fortunate enough to learn that we were extremely lucky. Lucky that we caught her condition in time. Lucky that her intestines were still healthy. Lucky that we lived in such close proximity to an institution that could identify the issue and act so quickly.
Not every child has the same opportunity to receive such incredible care. Not every family is able to take their child home. For all of these reasons, our family is honored to be participating in this year’s walk WITH our sweet Emery. It’s a small gesture of thanks to all of the doctors, nurses and staff that helped to save our daughter’s life.
Please consider making a donation to support our team’s fundraising efforts. Every amount counts in helping to fund Boston Children's exceptional care and groundbreaking research that can help every child.
