Why We Walk:
Addy’s Army walks for their 4th year for our real life Wonder Woman Addison. Addison is our 6-year-old daughter diagnosed with both HLH and a Primary Immune Deficiency Hypogamma. This past Summer Addison received a stem cell transplant to cure her HLH with her baby sister Brooke being her donor. Since the age of 3 ½ Addison has received monthly IVIG blood plasma infusions to boost her immune system.
We walk to say THANK YOU to the doctors, nurses, child life specialists, clowns, blood plasma donors, research teams and EVERY other person that has helped our family and continues to help in immense ways. Funds donated to Addy’s Army will go directly to Immunology Research. Immunology research is the REASON we discovered her HLH diagnosis and have a strong and healthy Addy.
Our families journey began with Boston Children’s Hospital when Addison was rushed to the Emergency Department from our local hospital in November, 2017 at the age of 2. The incredible team including Dr. Horowitz in the ER quickly assessed Addy diagnosing her as Septic and began a treatment plan, which included being admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Obviously, this was the scariest moment we had experienced as parents yet Children’s hospital gave us this sense of calm and comfort. We knew because of where we were, everything was going to be alright. Fast forward to September, 2019 when her baby sister was born we learned Addy has an additional diagnosis of HLH. Throughout learning and being educated about this new diagnosis her immunologist, Dr. Ari Fried became not only her doctor but part of our family. He called and emailed on weekends and late at night and always made himself available for our family. In March, 2020 Addison was supposed to have a stem cell transplant yet was delayed due to the pandemic therefore she has been in isolation since then. Addison received her stem cell transplant in June, 2020 with her younger sister Brooke (9mo at the time) being her donor to cure her HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis. Addison’s immune system is continuing to build and continues to get stronger each and every day thanks to the INCREDIBLE care we receive from Boston Children’s Hospital and her super hero oncology team including Dr. Christine Duncan and Dr. Jonathan Paolino.
PLEASE consider donating or joining our walk to support Boston Children’s Hospital!!
