At 18 weeks gestation, my husband and I were told our beautiful baby had several heart defects. We were referred to Boston Children's Hospital where our fears were confirmed when our baby was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia, an unroofed Coronary Sinus and Bilateral SVCs. Additionally, he was diagnosed with Primary Hypothyroidism, Hydronephrosis and a Grade 4 Kidney Reflux, resulting in his right kidney functioning permanently at only 12%.
Our sweet Nathaniel James arrived 4 weeks early in July 2019 and, on day 3 of his life, underwent a PDA Stent Catheterization. He recovered inpatient for 7 days and we were sent home so Nathaniel could bulk up for the full repair in about 5 months time.
On his 22nd day, Nathaniel stopped breathing at our home. He was resuscitated by Daddy on our dining room floor and we returned to Children's Hospital via their Critical Care Ambulatory Team. After a three week inpatient stay, Nathaniel's heart was fully repaired September 4, 2019 at 5 weeks of age by Dr Christopher Baird. Post surgery, we were inpatient for an additional four weeks.
Over his short 3-1/2 years of life, Nathaniel has undergone 10 surgeries/OR procedures, which includes 2 Open Heart Surgeries.
Nathaniel is the definition of resiliency and strength. And I'm so proud to be his Mommy.
I could never, ever repay Children's Hospital for what they have done for my family. They are the reason I still get to hug and kiss my beautiful son every single day. I owe absolutely everything I have to Boston Children's Hospital.
I am walking in honor of my little superhero. I am walking to thank the incredible Children's Hospital staff. I am walking to give back to the hospital who gave my son the gift of life.
