Cole's Crew
Our team is participating in the Eversource Walk for Boston Children’s Hospital this June in honor of Cole. Last year we hosted a cornhole tournament for Cole’s first birthday and made a commitment to fundraising in his honor yearly, and this is our first year doing the walk.
For those who don't know Cole's story, due to an abnormality identified halfway through my pregnancy, Cole was receiving care and admitted to Boston Children's Hospital before he was even born. His diagnosis was unclear up until the time he was born, but he had an incredibly rare congenital heart defect called Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return, which made his oxygen plummet once he was born. His heart and lungs were incompatible and surgery was the only option.
Cole's birthday was the best yet hardest day of our lives. He was intubated and rushed into life saving open heart surgery just hours after birth. As rough as it was to see him with all the tubes and machines, it was clear his care was thorough and thoughtful and his healing visibly improved every day. We felt cared for as well, and felt so lucky to have Boston Children's so close to home. After 19 days inpatient, Cole was discharged home with a few temporary medications and instructions to let him lead a healthy and normal life.
Now at two years old, Cole continues to thrive - he had an echocardiogram at 14 months that looked perfectly normal, and he only needs to see his cardiologist once a year which feels miraculous given his history. His scar continues to fade away, and you'd truly never guess what he went through if you didn't know his history (or if you've seen him run - he never stops!). He’s a big brother now, and his baby bro Owen also had a full heart workup at Boston Children's while still in utero which gave us a so much peace of mind during my pregnancy.
We are so grateful to Boston Children's Hospital for the gift of our strong, healthy and beautiful boy and want to give back to the Heart Center Urgent Needs in his honor. We've started an annual tradition to celebrate Cole's life while giving back to Boston Children's - every family deserves a happy ending like ours. Let's walk together!
