Our team, Grateful Hearts is participating in the Eversource Walk for Boston Children’s Hospital this June. Why we walk...
In November of 2016, when Keira was just twelve months old, she began collapsing and losing consciousness. During these events she would stop breathing and was unresponsive. There were no warning signs. Throughout the next two weeks, Keira had several more of these events. Each time we were able to revive her before the paramedics arrived. Keira was seen by many different medical providers who dismissed our concerns and thought she was fainting and misdiagnosed these events as "breath holding". We continued to push for answers and help for Keira. She was referred to Boston Children's Hospital and went to be evaluated by a cardiologist. While at her cardiology appointment at the BCH Waltham campus, Keira collapsed, lost consciousness and stopped breathing. When the cardiologist witnessed this, she contacted the Medflight ground crew and Keira was rushed to BCH in Boston and was immediately admitted to the ICU.
Once in the ICU, Keira collapsed several more times and they discovered that her heart was stopping. The heart monitor captured Keira's heart was pausing and stopping for long periods of time. Keira underwent surgery to have a pacemaker implanted in December of 2016.
Keira was diagnosed with a rare form of Vasovagal Syncope that causes extensive Asystole (cardiac arrest.)
When many other providers dismissed what was happening to Keira, Children's Hospital did not. Her doctor and his team were able to correctly diagnosis and provide the care that she so desperately needed and I thank God for them everyday.
It is hard to put into words the depths of gratitude we have for her doctor and his team for the care and support they have provided to her and our family through the years. This walk is our family's way of giving back to the hospital for all they've done for Keira.
