As Mother's day approaches, I can't help but reflect on my introduction to motherhood and how closely intertwined Children's Hospital Boston is during those first few years.

Within 30 minutes of Jim and I arriving at Brigham & Women's Hospital over 10 years ago, on Sunday, October 14, 2007, my entire life changed in more ways than I ever could have imagined. I delivered 2 beautiful babies 2 weeks before their scheduled delivery date and within minutes, learned Ryan was born with what the pediatricians called an 'anomaly' - a small bump in his neck. Within hours of his birth, specialists from Children's Hospital came to us at BWH, to assess Ryan's condition and discuss next steps.

This was the start of a long, complicated medical journey for us all. After more than a year, we learned the 'anomaly' was a rare tumor that grew rapidly, and into his jugular vein, causing multiple long hospitalizations and several near death complications throughout most of the first couple of years of his little life.

My son is alive today thanks to the talented, dedicated and creative doctors and nurses at Children's, who pushed boundaries to be able to finally resect that tumor. His unique and complicated case continues to be presented at medical conferences. We are forever grateful and this is why we walk.

This mother's day weekend will be spent at a basketball tournament with my healthy, handsome, extremely active boys and I can't think of a better way to spend my days. Please consider walking with us on June 10th or contributing to our team, as we support the amazing work done at Children's Hospital.
