Cole Jacob "Tough Guy"
My name is Cole and I am 8 years old. At 2 days old, with my Da deployed to Iraq, Momma got the scariest news of her life. I was seen by Drs from Boston Children's Hospital and quickly transferred there. I was in renal failure, not able to eat, and losing weight rapidly. At 5 days old I underwent major abdominal surgery to repair a blockage in my intestines. The Drs called me a conundrum as they never could figure out what caused this injury. I remained in the care of Children’s Hospital for almost 3 weeks. When I turned 1 I underwent a smaller less emergent surgery to repair 2 hernias. All went well until I went home and experienced an intense apnea episode. My parents rushed me back to Children's where I was seen by every specialty from neurology to urology. NO ONE could figure out what had happened but I got another 5 day long stay at the Hospital.
My mom and dad were always spoken to so they could understand everything that was going on. The nursing staff in the NICU took special overseas phone calls from my Da. They helped my Da surprise Momma and I when he showed up from deployment at the Hospital. The staff would come by just to let Momma know they held me for a little bit, while she was not there.
I have grown up knowing all about my Birth Story and my big adventure in this world. As I’ve grown I have more and more questions. When I was 2 I heard a commercial for the Children’s walk on the radio. I asked if that was for the sick kids like me. My momma told me yes and so I asked if we could do it. I have walked the whole 2 miles every year since then.
I am almost 9 now. I am playing Lacrosse for the fourth year. I am extremely smart and surprise my parent and teachers regularly. I love to read everything I can get my hands on. I really enjoy school I love Star Wars, Marvel Super Heroes, and sports. I am finishing third grade. I am a big brother. I am smart, sweet, caring, and adventurous. None of these things would be true if it wasn't for Boston Children's Hospital. I wouldn’t be here.
