Addy's Army

Addy’s Army walks for their 2nd year for Addison, our 4-year-old daughter diagnosed with a Primary Immune Deficiency who receives monthly IVIG blood plasma infusions. We walk to say THANK YOU to the doctors, nurses, child life specialists, clowns, blood plasma donors and EVERY other person that has helped our family and continues to help in immense ways.

Our families journey began with Boston Children’s Hospital when Addison was rushed to the Emergency Department from our local hospital in November, 2017 at the age of 2. The incredible team including Dr. Horowitz in the ER quickly assessed Addy diagnosing her as Septic and began a treatment plan, which included being admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Obviously, this was the scariest moment we had experienced as parents yet Children’s hospital gave us this sense of calm and comfort. We knew because of where we were, everything was going to be alright.

Addison is now diagnosed with Hypogammaglobulinemia, a Primary Immune Deficiency. This means part of Addison’s immune system functions improperly. Because one of the most important functions of the normal immune system is to protect us against infection, people with PI commonly have an increased vulnerability to infections, which can be recurrent, unusually severe, or won't clear up. People with PI can face frequent health problems and often develop serious and debilitating illnesses. For Addy it meant she was always sick, always coughing and has ended up in the hospital for what should have been just a small illness.

This past January Addison began IVIG infusions under the care of Dr. Fried in the immunology department. Every 4 weeks Addison goes to the CAT/CR in Boston and receives her monthly IVIG blood plasma infusion. This gives her body the antibodies she needs to safely be in school, go to birthday parties, attend dance and swim classes and most of all…just be a regular kid!
