Yoga Reaches Out 2022

Sebastian Strong

First and most important disclosure: my son, Sebastian, is healthy and well. I might even call him pretty darn perfect – but then again, I am his mother.

This is a pay-it-forward gesture to Boston Children's Hospital for saving his life a few years ago. At the most terrifying and vulnerable time in my life, I put all my trust and prayers into their medical knowledge and professional staff, and I am forever grateful that I made that choice. It was a life or death decision and because of them, the result was life. A happy, healthy, long life for a beautiful little boy. I can only hope the donations I raise will garner the same outcome for other struggling children and their families.

Sebastian was born 10-weeks early on March 2, 2016 at a different hospital. He had several complications in the NICU including broken bones, two rounds of NEC (which can be a fatal infection of the stomach), and  severe jaundice. After 45 days in the NICU he was discharged but still was not thriving. His  bilirubin levels were soaring and we were getting mixed theories as to why this was happening. I had to do something fast because the soaring levels of bilirubin can lead to brain damage.

Luckily, I have a medical background and realized something had to be done fast and urgently. A mother just knows. I quickly contacted Boston Childrens, where I found a physician that specialized in biliary atresia (the disease that some doctors proposed he had). I had to battle it out with insurance to get him covered there, and as everyone knows, that in itself can cause a nervous breakdown. At that point, however, money didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was bringing my baby boy back to health. I got Sebastian into Boston Children’s care before it was too late, and the rest is a tale of first-class medicine, and heart-wrenching miracles.

I want to give other families the same opportunity to save their children, by bringing them to such an  extraordinary hospital. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about how this hospital, and their team of doctors and nurses, saved his life. I am not exaggerating. They saved my son’s life.

It’s a bit serendipitous that yoga and Children’s Hospital have come together for this event. Because yoga saved me through those darkest of days. It still saves me, as life is always throwing us curveballs, especially as a busy working mother living in the world today. Yoga helps me clear my head and remain calm. It gives me a sense that everything will be okay. Yoga makes me strong. And it brings me hope.

Yogis are all about setting intentions. For many years, my intention was to stay strong and hopeful for my son and my family. Now, my intention is to help others plant two feet firmly on the ground, and know in their heart and souls that everything will be okay.

This event represents the two things that protected and healed me and my family when we needed it most. The hospital. And Yoga. Please join in the practice by attending this special event or donate to the team to help Boston Children’s Hospital save children and help families the way they saved my son. For those  of you that practice yoga please try to join. The event looks incredible. I’ve participated in a few of  MC yogi’s classes and they are beyond words. You will not regret attending this event.

I am planning to arrange a bus to bring us to and from Gillette Stadium in hopes enough people will join to practice. More details to follow once I get an idea of how many people plan on attending. Thank you.

Will you help me reach my fundraising goal with a donation today?

Every dollar I raise funds breakthrough research, family supports, and vital services not covered by insurance through the hospital's Every Child Fund. Your gift will:
  • give children battling the most complex diseases treatments they can't find anywhere else;
  • help children in your town and those across the world get a second chance;
  • fuel 3,000+ researchers working to find cures;
  • help patient-families in crisis with urgent needs, including housing, food and clothing;
  • bring crucial care to families through not 1, but 4 outpatient psychiatry clinics;
  • provide reiki, yoga and a safe place to simply exhale for families facing the stress of caring for a critically-ill child;
  • and so much more.
Please support my fundraising - and the children and families at Boston Children's and beyond.
