Last year, I had the opportunity to work as a research assistant at Boston Children’s Hospital. One of our studies examined the effectiveness of pulse oximeters across different skin tones, and my job was to approach families and recruit patients in the pediatric ICU. It was daunting at first. I didn't want to increase the burden of what was already a difficult time for the family, and I didn’t know what to expect while working in a unit with kids battling complex diseases. All my preconceived notions dissipated on my first day on the floor. A harp player filled the halls with soothing music, extravagant "Happy Birthday" signs lined a few doors, and many families were interested in participating in research.
What is so special about Boston Children's Hospital and is evident in the pediatric ICU is the role of the community in creating and maintaining a strong atmosphere of hope throughout a patient's stay. This hope, which is immediately recognizable, is the result of the collective efforts of the Boston Children’s Hospital team and the continous research being performed.
I am running with the Miles for Miracles team to support the groundbreaking innovation at Boston Children's Hospital and ensure that families continuously feel their child is receiving the best care in the world.
I am passionate about advancing research for complex diseases, bettering the community's health, and creating patient programs that let kids be kids, even during extended hospital stays. My passions are a few of the many missions that Boston Children's Hospital is committed to.
Every dollar I raise is a step towards helping the incredible kids and families at Boston Children's Hospital, and I am truly grateful for your support.
My most sincere thanks,
River Corrado
