“Caleb, what would you do with $100?”
This question was asked to my five year old son on his 100th day of school while I was in the middle of training and fundraising for the 2023 Boston Marathon. His response, “I would donate it to Boston Children’s Hospital”. Instead of buying something for himself like candy, toys, or games he decided to donate his newfound riches to others in need. His response made me incredibly proud of my son but also made me realize how powerful of an impact doing something for others can have.
Thank you for finding your way to my personal fundraising page for Boston Children’s Hospital. After last year’s very successful fundraising effort, I have decided to return to the Miles for Miracles Marathon team. However, instead of running the infamous Boston course in April 2024, I will be tackling my second World Marathon Major in London, England! Like Boston, the London Marathon is one of the largest and most prestigious races in the world.
Why keep running? Let me tell you; Casey Hammond Webber was born July 22, 2021, to the parents of my very good friends Molly and Taylor Webber. Soon after birth, Casey was having difficulty breathing on his own and was transferred to Boston Children’s Hospital. Casey underwent numerous tests and procedures and was eventually diagnosed with a rare lung disease, Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia. At six months old, Casey received a double lung transplant making him one of the youngest patients to receive a lung transplant in the history of BCH. After the transplant, Casey continued to fight through numerous complications but never gave up. On July 6, 2022, Casey passed away, but left behind a legacy of inspiration. Being on the outside, looking in, BCH provided amazing care and support to my friends and their family. I was in awe at the stories and pictures that were shared of their experiences. While Casey’s condition fluctuated, the one constant was the excellent care and support that BCH provided. After seeing everything that BCH had done, I was determined to give back to the organization that helped my friends in their time of need. Having run the Boston Marathon previously in 2016, I knew what an incredible opportunity it would be to fundraise for BCH. Not in my wildest dreams did I think we would have come close to raising nearly $20,000 in 2023. The whole experience of running in support of BCH was a humbling but inspiring one. Since then, I have committed myself back to running, something I never thought I would do again after multiple injuries from running years prior. My new running goal is to complete all six World Marathon Majors; Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. With BCH offering bibs into these prestigious races, it was a no brainer to return back to the team.
Casey continues to be my inspiration and will continue to be my “Why” throughout the journey to London and beyond. I ask that you join me in donating to the cause in an effort to raise a minimum of $10,000 for Boston Children’s Hospital.
If a financial donation is not in your cards this year, please consider donating blood or platelets in Casey’s memory at your local blood bank and please consider becoming an organ donor. You could be someone else’s second chance in life.
Together, we can all be Stronger. Tougher. Braver.
I Love You All.
In memory of Casey Hammond Webber July 22, 2021- July 6, 2022.
