It’s that time again! We will be walking in the Eversource Walk for Boston Children's Hospital on Sunday June 9th. We are so grateful for all of you that have continued to support our fundraising efforts for BCH through the years. The response has been nothing short of amazing and your support will do so much good for the patients and families of Boston Children’s Hospital. Most of you know Keira’s story and why this walk is so important to our family and our way of giving back to BCH for all they’ve done for Keira through the years.
In November of 2016, when Keira was just twelve months old, she began collapsing and losing consciousness. During these events she would stop breathing and was unresponsive. There were no warning signs. Throughout the next several weeks as these events continued, Keira was seen by many different medical providers who dismissed our concerns and thought she was "just fainting". As these events continued, we had to push for answers and help for Keira. She was finally referred to Boston Children's Hospital to be evaluated by both neurology and cardiology. While at her cardiology appointment at the BCH Waltham campus, Keira collapsed, lost consciousness and stopped breathing in front of the cardiologist. After the doctor witnessed this event she was immediately transferred to BCH in Boston and was admitted to the ICU.
Once in the ICU and several more of these events occurred, they captured her heart stopping on the monitor. It was discovered that Keira's heart was pausing and stopping for long periods of time. Keira underwent surgery to have a pacemaker implanted to prevent her heart from stopping.
Keira was diagnosed with a rare form of Vasovagal Syncope that causes extensive Asystole-heart stopping.
When many other providers dismissed what was happening to Keira, Boston Children's Hospital did not. Her doctor and his team were able to correctly diagnosis and provide the care that she so desperately needed.
It is hard to put into words the depths of gratitude we have for her doctor and his team for the care and support they have provided to her and our family through the years. This walk is our family's way of giving back to the hospital for all they've done for Keira.
