Boston Children’s Hospital NICU team was in the room when my wife delivered our son and quite literally stepped in to save Cameron’s life from the moment he was born.
Less than 24 hours after he was born Cam had a 7-hour surgery to correct his Esophageal Atresia and TE Fistula. 10 weeks later Cam required further intervention and had a 9-hour Tracheopexy surgery. Mid-February Cam was unexpectedly admitted to the ICU at BCH and it was discovered that he had a congenital Morgagni hernia, essentially a large hole in his diaphragm that was causing his liver to push against his heart, in addition to a collapsed lung. He had a 5-hour surgery to repair this but it did not resolve his clinical status. Early March Cam had a 8-hour open heart surgery and he remains in the Cardiac ICU at BCH while he recovers. His (hopefully) last surgery is scheduled for this May with the neurosurgery team to correct his tethered spinal cord.
Of Cam’s 8 months of life he has spent 138 days (and counting) inpatient at Boston Children’s Hospital. Their teams have supported our family as we navigated Cam’s medical complexities. Because of their expertise, dedication, and intervention Cam will go on to live a normal, healthy, long life.
