It has been over 6 years since Joey became a patient at Boston Children's Hospital even before he was born. Because of their skill and tireless committment, he has not only survived a number of medical wrenches thrown in his path, but he is thriving as a happy, spunky little boy.
Joey was born in August 2013 with trisomy 14 mosaic, a rare genetic condition that affected almost every part of his body, including his heart, intestines, liver, palate and more. He underwent his first surgery to repair a duodenal stenosis when he was about 21 hours old. He had two heart surgeries in his first two months. And he has been back for five more surgeries, all before age 3.
He (and we) have been to BCH for appointments lasting less than an hour and stays lasting several months. We have seen exceptional doctors and nurses save his life in ICUs, diagnose him with rare conditions, and treat him with the empathy and skill you would hope for in your child's medical team. We owe Joey's life to BCH and it is our privilege to return every year for the Eversource Walk for Boston Children's Hospital.
Funds raised through Team JoeyStrong will go to help children and families whose insurance does not cover necessary procedures; families with urgent needs when life has to stop for a hospitalization; affordable patient housing opportunities; activities like music, art, and pet therapies and holiday and birthday celebrations; and pediatric research. Our family has benefited from a number of these services and this is our way to give back to the families that find themselves in our shoes from 6 years ago.
