We experienced a miracle firsthand at Boston Children's Hospital.
The incredible team at Boston Children's saved our son Owen's life.
During our 20 week appointment, we discovered that Owen had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This means that his diaphragm didn't develop fully, allowing his stomach, liver and intestines to move into his chest.
This life threatening issue severely impacts the growth of the lungs.
Devasted by this news and told that he was incompatible with life, we took one last chance by going to Boston Children's Hospital to get a second opinion.
They confirmed the findings but explained there was a 60% chance of a positive outcome. The doctors said it would be a marathon filled with ups and downs.
In that moment we knew we only had one option: fight for our son.
Owen's delivery day was the real start of the race.
He was immediately placed on a ventilator after birth and a few hours later on the highest form of life support.
Within 24 hours he had his life saving surgery.
8 weeks later we left the ICU, and after 116 days in the hospital we finally brought Owen home.
Although Owen has been through so much, he's one of the happiest toddlers you'll meet. Always laughing, having fun and enjoying life to the fullest!
We're forever grateful to the team at Boston Children's Hospital.
A special thank you to: Dr. Farokh Demehri, Dr. Woo Do, Dr. Belinda Dickie, Dr. Jill Zalieckas, Ethan Schuler, all of the amazing nurses, and the countless other doctors, specialists, and technicians that played a part in Owen's journey.
I've joined the Miles for Miracles team to help make miracles happen for the other brave kids like Owen.
I'm aiming to raise $11,600.
$100 for each day Owen was a patient at BCH.
Every dollar I raise funds the very best medical care, breakthrough research and vital support services for sick kids and their families. Your gift will:
- help children from your town and across the world get a second chance at life;
- give kids battling the most complex diseases care they can't find anywhere else;
- fuel 3,000+ researchers working to develop new treatments and cures;
- support patient programs, like music and art therapy, to let kids be kids, even during long hospital stays;
- help patient families in crisis with urgent needs, such as food, clothing and housing;
- deliver the most compassionate, leading-edge care to every child who needs it.
Please support my fundraising and help the incredible kids and families at Boston Children's Hospital.
