Boston Children's Hospital Fellowship Program

Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is at the forefront of neurogenetics research around the world.  Dr. Christelle Achkar has been selected to serve as a Fellow in Neurogenetics starting July 2015 through June 2016.  While a percentage of her time will be spent with patients, the majority will be devoted to research in the field of neurogenetics.  Given that the current environment allows for very limited funding to support the many research projects throughout the hospital, philanthropy plays a major role for this funding gap as it is often expensive, and has very limited resources due to budget constraints, as well as limited grant opportunities. This lack of funding does not adequately reflect the importance of research, especially in the realm of genetics and translational research – that is, research that aims to directly impact the way patients are treated.

Dr. Achkar’s research will partner with collaborators in the Department of Cardiology throughout this project. This interdisciplinary approach will allow for the research to impact a larger population of patients while training the next generation of clinicians and researchers. This research will target new discoveries, which will lead to better treatments and outcomes for patients.

Boston Children’s ranks first in Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Urology. Boston Children’s partners with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to operate the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
